Bakuchiol Reviews

Bakuchiol is a natural isoprenoid compound found in the seeds and leaves of a leguminous plant called Psoralea corylifolia. Psoralea, originating from India and China, is a traditional folk herb widely used in Ayurvedic herbal therapy and traditional Chinese medicine. Research has shown that psoralea corylifolia contains a significant amount of active ingredients, including coumarins, flavonoids, and monoterpenes. Bakuchiol is the main component of the volatile oil in psoralea corylifolia, accounting for about 60%. Bakuchiol is an effective antioxidant, with a structure similar to resveratrol and an effect similar to that of A alcohol. Because it regulates gene expression very similarly to A alcohol (retinol), it is also known as a plant-based ” A-like alcohol ” and is referred to as a plant estrogen. It is a similar component that can truly replace “A alcohol”. Compared to A alcohol, bakuchiol has higher mildness, lower skin irritation, and no photosensitivity. Some studies have shown that in addition to anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-aging effects, bakuchiol also has whitening, oil control, acne resistance, and soothing effects. Based on the above advantages, backuchiol has appeared in an increasing number of skin care products in recent years. The latest research shows that when applied topically to the skin, it has unique benefits for all skin types.

How Bakuchiol Works

Bakuchiol is known as the “perfect” substitute for retinol (also known as Vitamin A alcohol, a derivative of vitamin A), not because they have similar structures. This is mainly because both have good anti-aging effects. It can regulate gene expression in a way similar to retinol, such as retinol binding proteins CRBP1, TIG1, etc. It targets some retinoid like cellular pathways, including the regulation of retinoid receptor genes and the upregulation of collagen and extracellular matrix synthase.

Health Benefits of Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol has been associated with an array of potential health benefits, such as Antiinflammatory, Antibacterial, Antioxidant, Anti-aging and so on, here we will browes some of its important Health Benefits as below:
Antiinflammatory
The occurrence of inflammatory reactions in the human body requires the involvement of inflammatory factors and the regulation of protein kinases (such as ERK or p38). Backuchiol can reduce the release of inflammatory mediators, thereby achieving anti-inflammatory effects. For example, it can reduce the production of NO (nitric oxide), PGE2 (prostaglandin 2), LTB4 (leukotriene B4), and TxB2 (thromboxane B2) to achieve anti-inflammatory effects.
Antibacterial
Human skin often has a large number of bacteria attached to it. Under normal circumstances, these bacteria participate in maintaining the micro ecological balance of the skin. However, when the skin is damaged or the micro ecological balance of the skin is imbalanced, it can cause various skin diseases. Backuchiol is an antibacterial substance that has a good inhibitory effect on Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Candida albicans, and fungi on the surface of the skin.
Antioxidant
The destruction of cells by free radicals is the main cause of aging. Lipids in sebum are oxidized under ultraviolet radiation. The formed peroxidation products can stimulate the fragile epidermal layer of the follicular funnel, leading to excessive keratinization, and then the shed keratinocytes mix with sebum to block pores, forming keratin plugs and acne. Backuchiol, as a stronger lipid soluble antioxidant than vitamin E, can effectively protect sebum from peroxidation and prevent excessive keratinization of hair follicles. Moreover, bakuchiol has an inhibitory effect on mitochondrial lipid peroxidation and the consumption of intracellular glutathione, thereby preserving the activity of respiratory enzymes in the mitochondrial electron transfer system and reducing cellular oxidative damage.
Anti-aging
Collagen is one of the most important structural proteins in human skin, which plays a crucial role in maintaining skin tone and preventing skin aging and shrinkage. This protein is synthesized and secreted by fibroblasts. Backuchiol can enhance the activity of human skin fibroblasts, reduce the breakdown of skin collagen, and promote the synthesis of skin collagen, thus achieving anti-aging effects. As is well known, vitamin A is the king of anti-aging, and psoralen, as a type of A alcohol substance, has similar effects to vitamin A. Researchers have even found that compared to vitamin A, backuchiol has a better promoting effect on type I and IV collagen. Moreover, multiple existing studies have shown that backuchiol has excellent ability to lighten wrinkles. Moreover, backuchiol can reduce pigmentation and lower the rate of transepidermal dehydration. All of this shows that backuchiol has great anti-aging ability.
Skin Whitening
Because tyrosinase is a key enzyme in melanin synthesis, it can effectively reduce the impact of melanin on the skin. Therefore, inhibiting the activity of tyrosinase is one of the ways to whiten the skin. Research has shown that in the low concentration range, backuchiol has a more significant inhibitory effect on tyrosinase than arbutin, and has the potential to become a natural tyrosinase inhibitor.
Other Functions
Bakuchiol has anti photoaging effects. Through skin testing, this ingredient can protect against UVB damage to HSF cells and exert anti skin photoaging effects. Oil control, first of all, backuchiol is an antioxidant that can have a certain oil control effect. Secondly, backuchiol can effectively inhibit the production of 5 α – reductase, thereby suppressing oil secretion and achieving oil control effects. It can also inhibit inflammation and have anti-inflammatory effects.

Bakuchiol Side Effects

Generally speaking, bakuchiol does not have any side effects, but excessive intake can cause adverse reactions such as rapid heartbeat and slow blood flow, and in severe cases, it can damage the kidneys. Patients who experience the above symptoms should take the medication in moderation under the guidance of a doctor and not take it in excess. Attention, pregnant women should not consume it, otherwise it may lead to miscarriage.
