What is Bitter Orange Fruit Extract Limonin
Bitter orange, also known as soul orange, Seville orange, bigarade orange, or marmalade orange。 It is a hybrid of Citrus maxima and Citrus reticulata, belonging to the Rutaceae citrus species. Bitter orange originated in the Asian region. The ancient Greeks used it as a fungicide in aromatherapy and a sedative in plant therapy. In the 17th century, people in France and Italy began to use bitter orange to extract essential oils.
The effective ingredients of bitter oranges include essential oils (limonene, linalool, geraniol, nerolidol, aldehydes, methyl ortho aminobenzoate), and flavonoids (hesperidin, rutin, naringin). The bitter orange fruit also contains a substance called Limonin, which is mainly found in the fruits of Rutaceae plants, with the highest concentration in seeds. This is also an important source of bitterness in citrus fruits. More than 50 types of Limonin compounds have been isolated and identified in citrus plants, including limonin, nomilin, deacetylnomilin, obacunone, and nomilic acid, which are triterpenoids with furan rings. The pure product of Limonin is white crystalline, with a bitter taste, easily soluble in ester organic solvents, difficult to dissolve in water, and has a high solubility in methanol and ethanol. Limonin have various biological activities such as anti-tumor, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and hypnotic effects.
How Bitter Orange Fruit Extract Limonin Works
Lemon bitters are triterpenoids containing furan rings, including a series of compounds such as lemon bitters glycosides and lemon bitters glycoside ligands. The molecular structure of such compounds is characterized by the presence of furan molecules on the D ring, which can induce glutathione S-transferase. However, limonin has no activity on this enzyme in the liver, and its activity is higher in the small intestine than in the liver.
Health Benefits of Bitter Orange Fruit Extract Limonin
Limonin has been associated with an array of potential health benefits, such as Beneficial for Antitumor Activit,Analgesic and Anti-inflammatory Effects,Antibacterial Effect and so on, here we will browes some of its important Health Benefits as below:
Antitumor Activity
At present, more than 300 types of limonoid compounds have been discovered, among which 8 limonoid compounds are considered to have anti-cancer activity, such as limonoid, nomilin, deoxylimonoid, limonoid, etc. Research has found that Limonin compounds mainly have three anti-cancer pathways: inhibiting carcinogenic factors, resisting free radicals, and inhibiting cancer cell growth. For example, limonin analogues have a great inhibitory effect on pancreatic cancer, colon cancer, and breast cancer. Moreover, limonin has a significant inhibitory effect on the proliferation of human liver cancer cell line SMMC-7721.
Analgesic and Anti-inflammatory Effects
Research has found that limonin exhibits significant analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects in animal models. For example, the anti-inflammatory effect of limonin was observed through mouse ear swelling model and carrageenan induced rat foot swelling model. The analgesic effect of limonin was discovered through formalin and writhing tests on mice.
Antibacterial Effect
Limonin also have certain antibacterial effects. Microbial antibacterial experiments have found that both 1.0g/L and 0.5g/L of limonin have a certain degree of inhibitory effect on Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus subtilis. Other studies have also found that in acidic environments, limonoid has a significant inhibitory effect on bacteria and fungi in food.
Other Functions
